"what's the deal with the 'or obvious fantasy counterpart' line in the rules for?" you may be wondering.

well, Monaquill Blackgoose's To Shape a Dragon's Breath is very clearly set on an alternate Martha's Vineyard, so wanted to make sure i could count it.

Nampeshiweisit is going to be a series that gets talks about for a good while. I love dragon riders, i love the setting, and i'm on the edge of my seat for the next book to be announced. it ended on a real good cliffhanger and i cant wait to see how it gets wrapped up

Another Indigenous author rec because I LOVE this series!

The Nampeshiweisit books by Moniquill Blackgoose (Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe) are Indigenous-centered fantasy with dragons, magic, culture, colonization & staying true to who you are.

Only 2/3 are out, so beware the cliffhangers! 😅

My 2.25-star review of To Ride a Rising Storm (Nampeshiweisit No. 2) by Moniquill Blackgoose — If you're looking for a polyamorous, dragon-riding, indigenous girl power fantasy, this is it, but book 2 is kinda stinky

21. To Shape a Dragon's Breath- Moniquill Blackgoose

An Indigenous take on the tropes of dragon-riding and magic boarding school, with a queer-normative culture in conflict with a cisheteronormative colonizer society.

Reasons To Ride a Rising Storm by Moniquill Blackgoose (Nampeshiweisit, Book 2) is giving me an aneurysm:
- The Ellanish philosopher Broadman Aristonson (... Or Plato)
- The Anglish playwright Wilhelm Speerman (... Or William Shakespeare)
- The Frankish philosopher Johan Russert (... Or Rousseau)

Author: Moniquill Blackgoose Title: To Ride a Rising Storm Narrator: Charley Flyte Publication Info: Books on Tape, 2026 Summary/Review: I greatly anticipated this second book in the Nampeshiweisit series - the follow-up to To Shape A Dragon's Breath - and it did not disappoint.  The series is set in an alternate history of 1840s New England where, among other differences, dragons are real and bonded with individual humans.

To Ride a Rising Storm (Nampeshiweisit, volume 2) by Moniquill Blackgoose

Anequs' heroism in the previous volume attracts undesired scrutiny for her community. Far worse is to come.

I loved To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose, and there's also a sequel! Fantasy with amazing female characters, an indigenous heroine forced to deal with colonial shittiness, and of course: dragons!

My favorite recent read is the Nampeshiweisit series by Moniquill Blackgoose. Very much in the vein of your listed favs and blends dragons, indigenous perspectives, fascinating alternate history, and an inspired magic system! Two books are out so far and they're just great.

I'm grateful this one isn't in my colors, I love the design of it a lot.

For others here who also love dragons, may I suggest the Nampeshiweisit series by Moniquill Blackgoose? I'm reading the second book right now and never want to leave this world.

Alternate history, a dragon academy, and a MC who shows what formidable strength can come from growing up among those who value community and acceptance.
