Update this afternoon from NOAA / NCEI about the NCEI-NC Asheville Data Center and the employees there.
UPDATED: Oct 1, 1:30 pm EDT RE: the Status of NCEI Employees, Operations in Asheville, N.C. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, NOAA employees and their families in Asheville, N.C., are dealing with the devastation of a catastrophic weather event that has impacted the region. The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has recently confirmed that all of its employees and staff have been accounted for, however many are still without power, water or connectivity. The NCEI Federal building in downtown Asheville has electricity, but not water, and the building will not be inhabited fully until that is resolved. The data center is currently shut down. NOAA NCEI’s network service provider is also currently down and at this point we do not have a timeline for when it will be fully operational. We will provide an update when more information is available. Our thoughts are with the people across western North Carolina and all of those who will deal with disruptions in...

Something I've been doing for the past 8 months is transferring decades of NOAA data from NCEI/NOAA servers and putting everything on AWS, in a private account. It's not publically accessible (aside from all other things, I don't want to pay for that bandwidth); but it is safeguarded. Still at it!

NOAA OISST data have been updated through 14 October.

I'm grateful for the unseen labor that went into restoring NCEI infrastructure amidst disaster, and I hope this is a sign that the surrounding communities are beginning to recuperate. 💜

A lot of this stuff also isn't even openly available online at NCEI. For example the data that I'm on right now is from the 80s and the public can only go back to about 2003 (I believe). As far as I know what I'm doing is the ONLY archive outside NCEI.

Last month was the 5th warmest January on record globally. This graph compares 2026 with every other January since 1850.

Data provided by NOAA/NCEI NOAAGlobalTemp v6.1.0.
A line graph shows the time series of global mean surface temperature anomalies for each January from 1850 through 2026. There is a long-term increasing trend and large year-to-year variability. The mean surface temperature anomaly in January 2026 was 1.12°C globally. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1901-2000 climate baseline. It's Colorado's hottest start to a year (Jan-Apr) on record by more than two degrees. That's a blowout in climate terms. Also nearly 8° above average.

NCEI statewide records (below) date back to 1895.

The goal here is for this to become a supplement to the RCC's ACIS API, should that go away for...reasons
