In 2016, Maslach and Leiter noted burnout interventions had mostly targeted individuals, though situational factors play the primary role.

The Disability Discrimination Act is under review, including proposals for a positive duty on organisations to prevent discrimination. These are proposals for now, and none of them has become law.

Safe Work Australia's model fatigue Code gives at least 12 hours between shifts as one example of a control. NSW approved the Code from February 2026.

A study of nurses giving medications found interruptions were linked to more errors, and nursing experience offered no protection. The risk tracked the interruptions, which makes it a question about how rounds are organised.

Safe Work Australia lists noise, poor lighting and uncomfortable temperatures as conditions that can become psychosocial hazards when severe, prolonged or frequent. WHS laws require these risks to be eliminated, or minimised so far as is reasonably practicable.

There is a name for this: organisational silence, Morrison and Milliken 2000. The collective withholding of information about problems. In nursing it is linked to worse patient safety, and the drivers are futility and fear.

A break that floats is a break that vanishes. A break at a fixed point in the shift is easier to pace around than one that lands whenever it fits, and a NUM can write a fixed time into the roster.

Some nurses wear a single earplug in one ear during medication rounds. It cuts background noise enough to concentrate, while still hearing a call bell or colleague. Worth checking your unit's PPE policy actually allows it.

The NDIS reform bill became law in August. Before it passed, the Human Rights Commission urged the Government to hit pause, citing consultation gaps and the impact on people with disability.

Research with nurses who have ADHD or autism found a demanding work environment and low managerial support. The same nurses reported that patient care itself worked well. The conditions were the problem.

An experiment asked working adults to rate job profiles. Neurodivergent candidates were rated lower on competence and warmth, and the gap was widest when the role was a leadership one.

Strengths-based framing has a narrow and practical use in workforce terms. It asks what conditions let a skill show up reliably, which is a question an employer can act on.

Some nurses with dyscalculia describe building deliberate double-checking into every calculation. Independent double-checks are standard for high-risk medications. That kind of deliberate checking is a clinical skill, and it deserves recognition.

If meetings drain you, try asking for the agenda the day before. Reading it in your own time turns a rapid verbal exchange into something you can prepare for, and it is a small ask that most chairs will happily meet.

A nurse who knows sensory overwhelm from the inside often reads a distressed patient differently, and research suggests empathy grounded in lived experience is one of our clearest strengths. It is worth counting that as expertise when decisions get made.

Studies with neurodivergent nurses keep finding the same strengths, like noticing a patient deteriorating before the numbers move, and empathy grounded in lived experience. The evidence is young, so I hold it lightly, but it matches what many of us notice at work.

Research on medication work has repeatedly linked interruptions with errors. For neurodivergent nurses a broken task can also cost the full price of rebuilding focus from scratch. Wards that protect med rounds are protecting patients at the same time.

Small tip for the week. Work out where the quiet corners of your building are before you need them. A break that lets your nervous system settle is worth protecting, and knowing your spot in advance makes it much more likely you will actually take it.
