Macro of a silver-spotted skipper butterfly (Epargyreus clarus) perched on a pink elegant zinnia flower (Zinnia elegans), photographed on October 13, 2026, at a pumpkin patch in Mathews County, Virginia. Viewed in profile facing left, the butterfly holds its dark brown wings mostly closed upright, revealing a distinct, irregular bright white patch centered on the underside of its hindwing. Its head features a dark compound eye and short antennae extending forward. Its legs anchor into the small yellow florets at the center of the bloom, while a soft green foliage bokeh fills the background.

A Common Carder Bee, in reality a tiny insect, appears gigantic in this close-up portrait as it emerges over the brow of a red Persicaria flower, nectaring as it goes. The Bee's black sticky legs are angled down between the florets of the bloom as it moves across the surface and extracts nectar, using its long tongue. One shiny black eye catches the sunlight below its fuzzy yellow back. The gossamer wings can be glimpsed against a blurred out green background. Camera: iPhone 15 Pro.

Back garden butterfly reprise!
- Entirely satisfactory shot of a red admiral on Buddleia.
- Holly blue on a Mexican orange, heh.
- Small white on lavender

Side-profile close-up of a red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) feeding on a tiny tubular flower along a purple butterfly bush (Buddleja) spike, showing black forewings banded in vivid red-orange and tipped with white spots. Macro view of a holly blue butterfly (Celastrina argiolus) perching on the white flower of a Mexican orange (Choisya ternata), displaying its pale powdery-blue underwing dotted with tiny black markings. Close-up profile of a small white butterfly (Pieris rapae) nectaring on a slender purple spike of lavender (Lavandula), showing its creamy-white and soft pale-yellow underwings

Though the flowers lean purple, the butterfly is an Eastern Tailed Blue. Brighter blue on the topside than the underside of the wings.
#ColorADay #BlueTue #ECK #photography #wildlife
A tiny butterfly is nectaring on a cluster of purple flowers. The butterfly's wings are powdery blue underneath with rows of dark spots, and two red spots at the edge of the hindwing. Because its wings are folded, it's hard to see much of the topside of the wing which is darker and brighter blue. It also has to very tiny "tails" that extend from near the red spots. Hence its name.

We got a new paper showing that squash and pumpkin flowers change with domestication and also that variation in flower traits impact visits from bumble bees

link.springer.com/article/10.1...
screen shot of PDF of paper in Evolutionary Ecology titled "Domestication is associated with changes in floral functional traits that impact generalist pollinator visitation" by Brochi-De Luca et al. 2026 figure showing phylogeny of cucurbita plant species, green for wild and orange for domesticated taxa, and then ordination plots for floral morphology, volatiles, pollen, and nectar traits complicated two-panel figure showing how generalist bee (bombus) and specialist squash bees (xenoglossa) nectaring responds to both domestication and to various plant traits
