The Cactus Grove by Michel Landa, translated by Edward Hyams (1960)

A French boy copes with an abusive father and a bullying older brother. Bought only because I spotted a copy on Flannery O'Connor's shelves in a photo.

Footage of Mrs. NeglectedBooks serving me breakfast each morning.

Actually, Fanny Brice and Robert Armstrong in Be Yourself! (1930). I'm fairly sure that Barbara Streisand never covered this tune.

Random covers from my TBR pile:
Finding Out by Thomas Baird (1967)

Who defaced the Renoir the night before its grand unveiling? No, it wasn't climate change activists.

Baird was himself a museum curator who wrote a number of sophisticated social comedies set in the art world.

Random cover from my TBR pile:
A Case in Madrid by Edmund Naughton (1973)

A direct-to-paperback novel by the author of McCabe, a fine novel & the basis of the classic Robert Altman film McCabe and Mrs. Miller. So ... is this a silk purse or a sow's ear?

New on NeglectedBooks: Many Lives, One Love (1972), the memoirs of Fanny Butcher, the book editor of the Chicago Tribune for over 40 years. Though a committed enthusiast for books of all qualities, she could, on occasion, skewer one as "simply unbelievably terrible.”

Just receive this book by Malachi Whitaker with an intro by Katya Taylor.
According to the New Statesman, it is ‘not an autobiography, not quite a journal, it combines in a most original way the qualities of both.’
Yes, please!

Seven years ago, I came across a strange novel about a woman who tries to raise a orangutan as a human. In 2020, with the help of @meandmybigmouth.bsky.social, Gertrude Trevelyan's Appius and Virginia saw print again after almost 90 years—and now her renaissance continues.

Never underestimate the power of books 📖
Even neglected books. Actually, especially those.
It's like taking a daily walk around the block and one day discovering something you'd never seen before. Try it.

PS: Mentioned by Iain Sinclair in his intro to The Lowlife' is this out of print book from 1951 -- sounds great but clearly old copies are precious. Costs $57 on Amazon (just checking the price there).

Gertrude Trevelyan dies at age 38 from injuries suffered during the London Blitz.

This Friday, Boiler House Press will release William's Wife, its second reissue of a novel by Gertrude Trevelyan, easily the most unjustly neglected British woman novelist of the 1930s. I am passionate about bringing this woman's amazing work the recognition it so deeply deserves.

I'm thrilled to see this article finally see the light of day. Oliver Soden provides the first comprehensive assessment of the work of Gertrude Trevelyan, whose novels we're proud to have reissued ("in handsome volumes") in the Recovered Books series from @bhousepress.bsky.social.
She wrote eight acclaimed novels in seven years. Then Gertrude Trevelyan disappeared completely from literary history.

Oliver Soden unravels one of literature’s greatest vanishing acts—and celebrates her return.
