After posting yesterday about the nelapsi vampire and Brekov Castle in Slovakia, I was surprised to see the ever-talented @nvgg.online had made this stunning version of the ruin in the game #tinyglade. Raise your chalices to modern interpretations of Gothic medieval strongholds! 🍷🖤
Yes smoke going through the rood wafting the smell of burnt gouda throughout the land. By the way, I hope you weren't expecting anything realistic. They are really minimalist tools.

Many vampires of Eastern Europe – from the Mullo of the Romani to the Nelapsi and Ohyn are so closely part of a hyper-local folkloric eco-system that thinking of them as a weaponsied antisemitic trope demonstrates that those using them as such have no true knowledge of them.

Bunika info #8: 1/3
When researching Slovak vampire types to base Marika on, one of those I came across was the "nelapsi". The first mention of these I can find in English is by Bunson (1993) who said nelapsi could kill with a single glance and that they were spoken of in the Zemplin region.

Research is still ongoing. If anyone knows more sources [pre-1990] on nelapsi, please let me know 🖤 My thanks to @nataljastgermain.bsky.social, @hookland.bsky.social and @laurenwrites.bsky.social who have been extremely helpful so far. Photo: Brekov Castle in Zemplin at travelguide.sk 3/3

Marika evolved into something distinct, separate from the nelapsi. However, this has led me down the path of trying to discover more on the nelapsi in folklore. Earliest source is currently 1953 which states that it is more like a ghost/zombie. The undead. But not necessarily a vampire 2/3

Thank you so much. I am trying to track this one down, but my latest theory is that the term "nelapsi" is a more modern affectation of "upir". Will probably post about this very soon.

If you are trying to track down Nelapsi, you need to start with Slovak folklore experts (possily Pavol Dobšinský, Eva Krekovicova et la). I have only ever encountered the oral folklore of the Nelapsi in Slovakia.

the fact that the flying Cie'th model (Wight, Nelapsi, Mithridates etc.) is used in exactly 2 spots in ffxiv and it's 1. Literally fucking Mithridates, name and everything, ported in as the second boss of the Twinning and 2. enemy models in the second stretch of Alexandria. Ok

As @nataljastgermain.bsky.social also pointed out, there is a big similarity between draugr and the nelapsi, as you noted too. It does get tricky [for me anyway] pre-1990 because the sources are in Slovak. What I find so thrilling though, is the sheer variety of vampire types in the local folklore 🦇

I'll have a look - that's quite a nice coincidence because our original source on the nelapsi does mention revenants by name - in English, curiously enough!

I have the full text of both, no mention of the Nelapsi in either of those. The trail kind of runs cold. Could just be an oral folk take I suppose, and Bunson was the first Westerner to document it. Though I would love to see something in writing from the region.

What you learn on the ground is that what is recorded more generally as Upir is named locally as Nelapsi. They were certainly named in some awful vampire books of the 1980s as a Slovakian vampire (eg The Compleat Vampyre).
December 3, 2024 at 8:08 PM
The main stories people were telling about the Nelapsi in the 1990s were of its connection to corpse roads and its death stare. As with all the vampire lore I collected, there were hyper-local variations, but they were the dominant themes.

An old post of yours I know, but what reliable sources are there that can confirm the existence of the Nelapsi in Slavic folklore?
