the funny thing is that at one-card scale, AdamW beats analytic NGD anyway because the activations already come preconditioned and you can't reach the critical batch size where the beta EMAs are beaten by the better gradient preconditioning.

it's a tiny little LLM model organism. there are a bunch of things which you can't do with normal models which work fine -- e.g., rotation is fully commutative up and down the model, you can compare any step in any optimizer to stateless NGD, and the expert gates are all orthogonal by construction.

I remember seeing a few NQS talks years ago about Adam beating the pants off NGD (which was ~ equivalent to the preferred domain-specific VMC optimization method) in practical terms, was very bitter lessoned
