God bless Jimmy Carter, the most beloved President of my lifetime. I weep at the loss, but thank him for the hundred years of goodness he gave this world and our country. Thank you, Mr. President. $

Professional orgs don’t always do a good job engaging with people on Twitter. One of things I love about hospice and palliative care orgs like NHPCO, AAHPM, SWHPN, and HPNA is that they aren’t afraid to have difficult conversations on Twitter.

#FactCheck Obviously Kennedy is lying because he was speaking officially. Also, technically he's implying that there's a non-terminal type of dying. Hospice is specifically for people who are expected to live less than seven months. NHPCO says the "typical" is 92 days. 30% die within a week.

I just dropped a Kathy off at NHPCO to tape a podcast and have lunch with some good friends. I’m grading papers at a nearby Starbucks and am so happy Kathy’s feeling so preppy today.… https://www.instagram.com/p/BvmPGNBgjrs/?utm_source=ig_twitter_share&igshid=61yvgx19qa74

To my friends and colleagues at @NHPCO: please don't try to pass the buck and say this isn't under your control.

It is 100% under your control:

CAHPS Hospice Survey

If @NHPCO wants LGBTQ+ patients and families to feel safe seeking and receiving hospice care, first they need to demonstrate their commitment to measuring the quality of care received by LGBTQ+ patients and families.

NHPCO needs to add SOGI questions to CAHPS. Full stop.

The prompt response was appreciated but deeply unsatisfying.

I wanted to know the process for formally requesting that @CMSGov and @NHPCO add SOGI questions to CAHPS.

So, since there's apparently not a formal process to file a request, I'm using Twitter.

I got a prompt response from @NHPCO suggesting I contact the Hospice CAHPS Survey Team.

I emailed them my question.

Here's the response I got

I’m looking forward to working with NHPCO to help them get SOGI data added to the CAHPS survey.

I emailed @CMSGov and @NHPCO today and asked, "What is the process for formally requesting the addition of questions about sex assigned at birth, gender identity, and sexual orientation to the CAHPS?"

Also, I learned that what NHPCO referred to earlier today as an “outreach guide” is actually a resource guide (thank goodness!) The person who sent that tweet from NHPCO’s account is a dear friend of mine and they didn’t intend to get the name wrong.

An update:

@NHPCO reached out to me via email this afternoon. Last week in a comment letter to CMS, they included a suggestion re: SOGI data (see page 49). Thank you to everyone who has been speaking up about this issue — NHPCO clearly heard you!...
