Ireland used to have a much more extensive rail network. The small town I live in has a building that was once a train station, now there’s hardly a working stretch of passenger track in the entire county. Dublin and Belfast both had well established electric tram networks in the NINETEEN-TWENTIES.
You can visit many small villages in the UK and find traces of a decommissioned railway. Almost like we had universal transport sorted by the 1950s and decided everything was worth binning for the car.
