Weird feeling when you go to a museum and there's a giant platinum-clad bronze statue of somebody you've actually met. (Andre StrongBearHeart Gaines, Jr., a Nipmuc traditional architect and canoemaker.)

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day.💚

I acknowledge that the land I’m on is the traditional homeland of the Massachusetts people. I recognize their close neighbors the Wampanoag and the Nipmuc.

Dug more into my ancestry and discovered that I do have indigenous roots, mostly from the Eastern Algonquian peoples, which include the Pocumtuc, Agawam, Nipmuc, and Nonotuck.

It’s been one hell of a learning experience for me

Day 3 of a local #Indigenous community creating a dugout canoe, now carving details of traditional foods & medicines like fiddleheads & sassafras ~ mishoons were traditionally made like this by many Northeastern groups:

Who is "everyone" in this scenario? The Nipmuc in what is now Western Massachusetts? Hohokam? Rural Chinese during the Ming dynasty? Berbers? Wiradjuri? Rapa Nui? Sami? Timurid? Guarani?

"Everyone" did this?

Nipmuc people are making a fire-burned dugout canoe all weekend here in western Massachusetts

Mishoons were traditionally made like this by many Northeastern #Indigenous communities

The tradition is resurging lately as @culturalsurvival.org reports, www.culturalsurvival.org/news/resurgi...

Just learned that Kali Reis, co-star, with Jody Foster, of the Night Country season of True Detective, is a champion boxer. She was very good in the HBO show. She's native American. Cherokee / Nipmuc. She's active regarding MMIW, missing and murdered indigenous women.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! We honor the rich cultures and resilience of our Indigenous communities, especially the Massachusett, Wampanoag, and Nipmuc peoples, on whose land Boston stands. May we embrace the teachings of our Native communities.

For me the triggering thought was "huh, I've done a lot of deep reading/museum visits about Native history in New England, and have literally never heard a Wampanoag/Mohegan/Pequot/Nipmuc/etc. person say this"

Aerosmith played their first gig in Mendon, Massachusetts at Nipmuc Regional High School on November 6, 1970.

It has been more than a generation since the English came to stay, and you are a Nipmuc farmer in a Praying Town in New England. But war is brewing, and choices need to be made when it comes to how #skystorians will respond...

Hello from the homeland of the Nipmuc, the fresh water people, where the wetlands are still rich with the signs of their relationships with the wild world.

Good morning, Wapato, Katniss, oh generous denizen of the marsh, food of the Massachusett, Wampanoag, and Nipmuc.

I don't want to learn French. I want to learn Occitan.

I don't want to learn Icelandic. I want to learn Faroese.

I don't want to learn Wampanoag. I want to learn Nipmuc.

(And this is probably why I never end up learning anything.)

I'm excited to see this in person. The chapter I contributed to is an early American sweep, with space given to stories of Powhatan, Wampanoag, and Nipmuc peoples. It concludes with present-day descendant communities.
We’ve gone to press for #ChangingHistoriesKS3 Expanding Worlds! It’ll be hitting our warehouse on 13 June so do get your orders in! In my 10+ years of history publishing, I honestly think this is one of the best books we’ve produced. Spell-binding narrative, stunning visuals and super accessible.

On the afternoon of May 19 1676, right exactly where our asses are standing, those English soldiers were fighting a running retreat with Wampanoag, Nipmuc, Pocumtuck, and Abenaki soldiers, trying to flee back southward to Hadley.
