How has Arctic sea ice changed since 1979?🧊

From 1979 to 2026, September average sea-ice extent shrank by 2.24 million km².

This animation follows each year's minimum, showing how it has changed over time. Yellow marks 1979, while magenta shows 2026.

It's always fall in the deep sea! 🐋

Whales play an essential role in the ocean ecosystem—even after they die. When a whale sinks to the bottom of the ocean, the “whale fall” provides food for everything from scavengers to sulfur-loving bacteria for up to a century!
