#non-CUSMA
I was wondering where the CX-50 went!

"...a March 2025 cross-border trade dispute that resulted in Canada enacting a retaliatory 25% surtax on non-CUSMA-compliant, U.S.-assembled passenger vehicles, Mazda Canada officially suspended all factory imports of the vehicle effective 5-12-2025."

Oh no! A warning!

Oh wait, it's Susan Collins, it's meaningless.

He did WHAT?!

…Yes, apparently persona non grata, Pete Hokestra, did. Whatta scumbag.

Thanks for emboldening our resolve, USA. #BoycottUSA #CanadaStrong #tariffs #CUSMA 🇨🇦
It doesn't get any lower. Pete Hoekstra went to Gander on the 9/11 anniversary to threaten Canada.
Time to show this toxic bum the door.

Navarro also repeated his tariff lies about Canada. FYI tariffs on dairy only apply when quotas are exceeded, and that's NEVER HAPPENED. Auto tariffs on non-CUSMA-compliant vehicles were enacted after Trump's 2025 tariffs. And Provinces pulled U.S. booze
due to Trump's tariffs, insults & threats.

Article 32.10 of the existing Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA/USMCA) contains a similar clause. See "non-market economies".

Canada has far less exposure than the unwashed US administration believes.

Canada’s exposure to a termination of CUSMA is estimated by the Bank of Canada as a reduced growth of 2.4% by 2030. A non-trivial sum but hardly an amount that would cause Canadians to wish to become a vassal of USA.

Except the latest round of negotiations included non-tariff demands (from the US) which would, indeed, make Canada a vassal state. It's bad enough they are violated the USMCA / CUSMA which tRump negotiated (& bragged about) in his 1st term ... but the other demands are way off side

Canada is a G7 nation, a Commonwealth country, a founding member of NATO (40+ operations) and the UN (50+ peacekeeping missions), and had 51 non-US trade deals in place before President Trump broke CUSMA. We share a 9000km border, but it's a big, world.
August 28, 2026 at 10:36 PM
I think that’s premature. We still don’t know what the U.S. actually proposed. CUSMA already has special rules for trade deals with non-market economies like China. If this was about tightening those safeguards, I might support it. Without the text, I can’t say walking away was clearly right.
August 26, 2026 at 5:10 PM
In addition, Canada should impose tariffs - 15,25, 50%? - on all non-CUSMA compliant products or services until the U.S. strengthens its border controls to prevent illicit drugs and illegal firearms entering Canada.

Conservatives are squawking away. The CUSMA provision is limited to non-market economies - i.e. economies that dont have a free market - like china, north korea, russia. And The term the US tried to include included all countries including market economies - europe, uk, australia, etc.... EVERYONE.

• Preemptive Trade Restrictions on Non-U.S. Nations:
Mandates forcing 🇨🇦 to match U.S. sanctions, export controls, and import tarills on third-party countries automatically, forfeiting Canada's right to establish independent foreign trade relations.

Highlighting some grievances the US published in March/26 re trade with Canada (other countries as well). “Barriers” the US wanted curtailed or eliminated

It’s extremely revealing. So much of what is under the umbrella of 🇨🇦’s sovereignty, is seen as “unfair”. #TradeWar #CUSMA #cdnpoli #Never51

Just for some info...There is a clause in CUSMA that allows the US to veto any trade agreement with non-partnered nations ( like China and many others). Once CUSMA is gone we will truely be free of the american gangsters.
August 22, 2026 at 8:50 PM
{𝐚𝑱𝑺𝑫} The trade talks collapsed, but the larger story is what Washington says comes next.

Trump is back to statehood rhetoric, Greer says no new talks are planned, and retaliation is replacing negotiation.

A brief report on what the rupture may actually signify:
August 23, 2026 at 10:06 PM
Mark Carney says the U.S. is violating CUSMA side agreements on steel, aluminum, and autos daily, questioning what message chronic non-compliance sends to trading partners.
August 22, 2026 at 4:35 PM
No one wins a trade war. But withdrawing from Washington, responding in kind but without escalation, and pursuing non-US trade opportunities is the best path. It isn't ideal --that would be honouring fully the CUSMA deal already in place negotiated by Trump himself-- but it will have to do.
August 22, 2026 at 2:29 PM
So we're back to waiting until the US trade court decides whether the second round of 47's tariffs are legal (probably not, especially since he's ignoring CUSMA rules in a bid to recover the tariff money he had to give back). Meanwhile we retaliate as we did last time and pump non-US trade bigly! 💪
