Writing as a historian of material culture who is also a curator, my research tips are:

(1) nontextual artifacts are evidence;
(2) museums and historical societies have material culture and often the associated archival material; and
(3) wherever you research, bring a sweater and wash your hands.

First-person accounts and oral histories of queer reading and book use demonstrate significant practices of 'not-reading': shelving, hiding, destroying, touching and imagining books. Oral history is a particularly valuable methodology for analysing such hard-to-trace practices. 1. (Not) reading, book use and queer subjectivities Reading is intimately bound up with self-fashioning, and queer reading is no exception: accounts of queer coming-to-selfhood and sexual self-knowledge - anecdotal, autobiographical, oral historical, sociological or fictional - are often initially, or also, textual experiences. But as Stephen Orgel observes, "there are other things to do with books besides read them", and other, nontextual experiences-with-books also play a significant role in the construction of queer subjectivities. If we read queer histories of reading and book use for instances of not-reading, what else might be revealed about the relationships between LGBQ individuals and the books they do things with? In this chapter, I examine LGBQ individuals' memories of reading and experiences-with-books in order to make the case for nontextual book use - explicitly not-reading - as constitutive for queer selfhood. I draw on an archive of original oral histories in which ten LGBTQ adults recall their memories of reading in childhood and adolescence. Textual Preferences: The Queer Afterlives of Childhood Reading, accessioned by the University of Roehampton in 2019, is a collection assembled with the precise aim of examining reading processes and practices. With a human co-worker, these resolve by just hanging out. Put your desks together & work, or play games or go out for drinks after. These include nontextual comms like voice or body language. You learn their quirks (hopefully) quickly. But most people find this harder with a NLM, in fact...

nothing against textual queerness but i think treating it as inherently “purer” or “better” than nontextual queerness is a pretty toxic mindset to have and will just make you more alienated from the art in question by making it a box to be checked instead of a reflection of what the art means to you

Before that, he was the FCC's General Counsel. I first nominated Commissioner Carr to the FCC in 2017, and he has been confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate three times. His current term runs through 2029 and, because of his great work, I will now be designating him as permanent Chairman. Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans' Freedoms, and held back our Economy. He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America's Job Creators and Innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America. Project 2025: INDEPENDENT REGULATORY AGENCIES In addition to the executive departments and agencies discussed previously, a number of independent commissions exist that are loosely affiliated with the executive branch. In general, the President can appoint people to these commissions but cannot remove them, which makes them constitutionally problematic in light of the Constitution's having vested federal executive power in the President. Nevertheless, they exist, their constitutional legitimacy has generally been upheld by the courts, and there will be an opportunity for the next Administration to use them as forces for good, particularly by making wise appointments. Few appointments to these commissions will be as important as the President's selection of the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). In Chapter 28, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr writes that the FCC chairman "is empowered with significant authority that is not shared" with other FCC members. Under a new chairman, he writes, "The FCC needs to change course and bring new urgency to achieving four main goals: Reining in Big Tech; Promoting national security; Unleashing economic prosperity; and Ensuring FCC accountability and good governance." "The FCC," writes Carr, "has an important role to play in addressing the threats to individual liberty posed by corporations that are abusing dominant positions in the market." Nowhere is that clearer "than when it comes to Big Tech and its attempts to drive diverse political viewpoints from the digital town square." Carr writes that the FCC should require more transparency from Big Tech, which today "offers a black box." And it should issue "an order that interprets Section 230"- which provides protection from legal liability to online computer services that p825 Project 2025: Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise moderate content in good faith-"in a way that eliminates the expansive, nontextual immunities that courts have read into the statute." In addition to taking unilateral action, Carr says, the FCC should work with Congress on legislative changes to ensure that "Internet companies no longer have carte blanche to censor protected speech while maintaining their Section 230 protections." Carr writes that during the Trump Administration, the FCC took an "appropriately strong approach to the national security threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party." The FCC put Huawei on its Covered List of entities-its list of those posing "an unacceptable risk" to U.S. national security. Carr writes that TikTok also poses a "serious and unacceptable" risk to U.S. national security, while providing "Beijing with an opportunity to run a foreign influence campaign by determining the news and information that the app feeds to millions of Americans," and the next Administration should ban it. What's more, Carr writes, "U.S. busi- nesses are aiding Beijing-often unwittingly"-in its effort to become, by 2030, "the global leader in artificial intelligence." In part, they are doing so by providing "Bei- jing access to their high-powered cloud computing services." Carr asserts that "it is time for an Administration to put in place a comprehensive plan that aims to stop U.S. entities from directly or indirectly contributing to China's malign AI goals."
