Northland Power has officially started commercial operations at the Oneida Energy Storage Project, a significant milestone for the company marking its initial energy storage asset in Canada. Situated in Haldimand County, Ontario, the project boasts a capacity of 250 megawatts and a 1,000 megawatt-hour battery, representing a substantial investment in the province’s energy infrastructure. The total investment concluded at roughly $700 million, a reduction from the initially projected $800 million at the time of financial close in 2023. The Oneida Energy Storage Project is a collaborative effort, with Northland Power holding a 70% ownership interest. The remaining stake is divided among several partners, including the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, NRStor Inc., Aecon Concessions, and the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation. Backed by a 20-year capacity contract with the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the project anticipates a steady and reliable revenue stream over the coming years. Looking ahead, Northland Power continues to expand its energy storage portfolio. In April 2025, the company finalized financing for the Jurassic Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in southern Alberta. This 160 MWh BESS is slated to begin construction shortly and is expected to be operational by late 2026.
