On the tiny island of Minorca, off the eastern coast of Spain, lived the biggest bun-bun in Earth's history: Nuralagus.

Weighing in at 20–25 lb (8-12 kg), the Nuralagus was 10X the weight of a standard bunny, or 2X size of a Flemish Giant.

They were driven into extinction about ~3MYA *by goats*.

Day 5 floppy ears meet the largest rabbit relative Nuralagus. They were able to get large because the island they live on had no hooved ungulates. #prehistoricmammals #pixelart #nuralagus #rabbit #pixelartwork #pixtober #pixtober2025 #octobit2025 #octobit

Today’s random Wikipedia page I’m reading is: wallaby-sized prehistoric rabbits (well, lagomorphs) from Mallorca!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuralagus

Probably wiped out by prehistoric goats stealing their habitat and food sources, not humans for once

there are some words that are just so perfect for the thing they are describing, i cant help but smile. like nuralagus. like yeah that IS what a fatass pliocene rabbit would be called wouldnt it

There were no predators of any kind on Minorca, and possibly only one other mammal (a dormouse), so Nuralagus is an example of insular evolution.

The lack of predators removed selection for predator-evasion; so Nuralagus had a tiny head, weak eyesight and smell, couldn't hop, and was slow-moving.

Alors c'est marrant parce que justement, cette "chèvre", a occupé l'habitat à Minorque d'un lapin géant qui a disparu il y a 5 millions d'années

It doesn't appear that Nuralagus developed any special genes for gigantism, and just were remarkably long-lived, out-growing their head size over the space of 8-9 years.

A weird little dude & A GIANT BUNNY!

To those that Celebrate, have a Happy Easter 2024! Some from my backlog in the previous years. Coincidentally, it's also in the middle of Ramadan, which gives the context of the homesick knight painting eggs.

And of course, Nuralagus, the IRL chunggus rabbit.

Precambrian was > 500 million years ago.

5 million years ago was the Pliocene epoch, a relatively recent epoch of the Neogene (which we used to call the "Age Of Mammals")

There were giant bunnies in the Pliocene
