And at least those workers are often reasonably paid at a baseline. NYCDOE paraprofessionals make less than 32k a year starting salary for a physically and emotionally difficult job helping special needs children get a quality education.

I worked for NYCDOE for a decade+ my first career and I hated their bureaucracy but hot damn this is an amazing "get fucked, actually" letter. If there's one thing NYCDOE admins hate it's outsiders telling them what to do. 🤣 (I was an outsider. Trying to tell them what to do.)

#uspol
but there are no federal or State laws prohibiting the principles of DEI,"says the letter.

The NY dept says it already follows civil rights laws, including Title VI.

You must work in a school system. Its heading to Fresh Kills; cause that's the NYCDOE under Ghouliani, Bloomberg and Adams.

If we're disaggregating American states, let's disaggregate German states. The starting salary of a teacher with a master's in the lowest-paying German state is 1% less than at NYCDOE; in the highest-paying state (Bavaria) it's 20% more, and NYC is wealthier than Bavaria.

Just beginning my NYCDOE IEP journey solidarity

Honestly? Yes. NYCDOE only pays a bit better than this (extremely derogatory to NYCDOE).

Does NYCDOE have the vacant schools problem that Chicago has?
October 22, 2025 at 1:26 PM
Yeah, but this persists even within districts (hence my SHSAT comment) - NYCDOE doesn't underfund majority-black/Hispanic schools relative to majority-white/Asian ones, and at this point doesn't have less funding/student than the white flight suburbs.

American schools are funded by property taxes, and majority-minority neighborhoods tend to have low property values, which means underfunded schools, and the tests do measure the quality and focus of the education available to the students.

Yeah, the contrast between London's school integration and New York's segregation is pretty disgusting. But then the resources available across NYCDOE are pretty evenly distributed. And Israel is even more segregated and yet we see Arab overperformance in medical fields.

There isn't the same level of educational apartheid in the UK and many of the minority students are from immigrant families who have a very strong pro-school ethos. On the other hand, iirc, I think there is a growing issue with Bengali boys' achievement.

Yep. It's a corner case of how road funding works in some local jurisdictions of the US (and then ignores things like wanton NYCDOE inefficiency).

Loved having the opportunity to sit down and talk comics and social studies with @gregsilber.bsky.social & @comicsbeat.bsky.social! So very proud of the work we’ve done as part of the Civics For All Comics Group team in the NYCDOE!

It's emblematic of broader themes of blue state political corruption and waste, fraud, and abuse. That NYCDOE spends this much per student and is very much not the envy of the rest of the nation is much bigger.

These are my people!! We wholly need a (forever) AI moratorium for NYC schools now!! Please listen @mayor.nyc.gov @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social #Mamdani #NYC #NYCDOE @governor.ny.gov

NYCDOE, like all American school districts, pays teachers shit. It is not to anyone's credit in city politics that raising teacher salaries is not an openly debated political issue there, just a sectoral UFT issue.
