nome asks tobin about his reasons for becoming an adventurer. after some initial hesitation, tobin shares.

nome walks on a road in western thanalan. he is turned towards his right as he speaks. tobin glances towards his left. he has a somewhat tense expression. text: "What…" They turn to look at Nome, surprised to hear his voice. He hasn’t said much since they left the Quicksand. Nome shrinks a little, but his curiosity about whatever he wants to ask wins out over his usual cowed demeanour—already an improvement from when he joined them. "What made you want to be an adventurer?" Tobin swallows. He doesn’t say anything right away, instead turning his head away from Nome to focus on the horizon once more. Yasha feels conflicted over the self-flagellation that starts to play across the kid’s face. It’s a fairly innocent question, one some adventurers might even be eager to answer. On the other hand, it delves into more sensitive territory. Not everyone takes on the adventuring path for the pure whimsy of it. As much as he wants to criticize Nome for making Tobin uncomfortable, Yasha can’t deny his own curiosity, and a small flame of eagerness flickers in his chest when Tobin does answer. text: "My brother, Declan, was part of the Order of the Twin Adder. So was my father, but I don’t remember much about him, besides when he left.” Tobin steps deftly over a tree root snaking across his path. “Declan was my hero. Anything an older brother should be, he was, even though I gave him such a hard time. He had to take over looking after me when our mother passed, and he couldn’t do a lot of the things he wanted to because of that." There’s no change in Tobin’s gait, and he keeps his eyes straight ahead as he speaks. Yasha is sure Tobin can feel the weight of his gaze on him. Nome is even more obvious, his head craned away from the road as he gives Tobin his full attention. "I hated him when he decided to join up. Really, I was just scared of losing him, but I didn’t want to admit it. I said a lot of things I shouldn’t have the day he left and I didn’t get to take them back." Tobin pauses his speech to take a long breath. "He went missing during the Battle of Carteneau. It’s hard enough that no one is entirely sure how the fighting ended, but there were so many dead already, and all the chaos in other places from the Calamity, that there wasn’t any time or resources to look for him specifically. When they declared him officially dead a year later, they didn’t have much of a choice."
