Waves, tsunamis, storms, riptides

who knew electoral politics would require such knowledge of oceanography

It kinda must be. I bet its oceanography and engineering departments are beyond reproach.

I’m a geophysicist. Meteorology and oceanography. 46 years.

Is this abject incompetence a failure of the administration to hire experts or a concerted effort to destroy the U.S.
Earlier this fall, several climate scientists wrote a paper suggesting the group of experts handpicked by the admin to criticize climate science, may have confused two layers of the Earth’s atmosphere (the troposphere & the stratosphere) & based claims about climate models on that faulty analysis.

Just in time for Halloween, I made a Marine Heatwave dashboard. It's unintentionally horrifying. 😱🌊🥵

Hourly water temperatures from California's buoys, moorings, tide gauges, and shore stations, together on one map.

The meteorology and oceanography contributing factors were extraordinary: a powerful nor’easter developed near Nova Scotia, fueled by the contrast between cold, dry Canadian air and warmer Atlantic air. It then absorbed Hurricane Grace, drawing in additional tropical heat and moisture.
