Adult converts are always, frankly, the fucking worst because they already have a fully shaped worldview and they just smash the Catholicism into the gaps no matter how much it distorts what they actually learn in OCIA

Our priest is so silly. he's constantly trying to make everyone laugh. the OCIA meetings go like this:

OCIA coordinator: [something serious about Jesus, or church procedure]
Priest: [sotto voce wisecrack]
Me & the deacon, the only 2 close enough to hear him: [suppressed snorting, choked laughter]

Slightly more than half (54%) of OCIA participants were women, contra "young rightwing men are the ones becoming Catholic." Roughly equal numbers of people in OCIA come from "none" / Protestant / baptized Catholic backgrounds.

Yeah we uh. Also explicitly said this in OCIA. Idk what Baptist church he did his RCIA at but

When I have to take my OCIA class aside to explain it’s not about the Latin mass it’s in fact the fascism

Informed my OCIA class that AI is demons 🫡

The Archdiocese of Chicago spearheaded surveys of OCIA participants (adults who became Catholic this spring) from 20 US arch/dioceses, and (as I've suspected based on our church's OCIA group), the data does not support any one particular theory.

Most fascinating comment from the OCIA group tonight: we did the Bible basics session and one of our people, whose native language is Arabic, said of the Sacred Scriptures, no offense, but English is not the right language for this sort of thing.

Interesting chart on OCIA numbers, Archdiocese of Cincinn—wait, what

OCIA was a lot of fun tonight. "Can we go over the Trinity again? I'm not sure I get it."

🔙 to OCIA
JD Vance on CBS is still trying to Catholic-splain to the freakin' Pope

The "adults converts are all MAGA trads who want to cosplay fascism" narrative is not supported by what data we have (see the Archdiocese of Chicago's National OCIA survey) and it is also not supported by my anecdotal experience as a (cradle Catholic) minister. www.archchicago.org/about-us/ocia

I had this conversation a few times as an R/OCIA director
I converted to Catholicism a couple weeks ago. Here’s how Communion should work.

If Jesuits had done JD’s OCIA, he would’ve never said this.
Vance: People hang out those hideous signs in their yard that say, "in this house we believe blah blah blah blah blah. You know, love is love, science is science, whatever. No person is illegal." That sign is such a disgusting butchering of the Nicene Creed

This is the part I had to translate for my OCIA class. Because if you don’t know, then you’re like oh! Why can’t they have the Latin! But it’s not just the Latin!

So apparently jd got to skip the ocia process most Catholic converts have to go through, which explains a lot.

rumor has it we've got 40 or 50 people in the pipeline for next year's OCIA class. wild

There is some self-selection to the people signing up for OCIA (formerly RCIA) at the church where I work so I am conscious of selection bias, AND:

79 people have formally inquired about OCIA this year (49 baptized; 30 not). We ask people "What is one question you have about Catholicism?,"

Trying to explain a novena to my OCIA class: so imagine a burger
June 29, 2026 at 8:15 PM
Here’s the thing: for official Catholicism, that’s not fake. Exceptions to OCIA aren’t unheard of and often have fine logic behind them. You’re not even fake if you got a shitty religious education. I mean, that would eliminate so many cradle Catholics, lmao.
I read he didn’t do traditional RCIA but had a Dominican friar or something do one on one classes with him. So kinda fake imo

In the Catholic Church, the Easter Vigil Mass is when people joining the Church through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) do so. (Unless they skip OCIA like JD Vance did & get a bespoke initiation, where apparently they skip teaching everything the Church stands for). 1/

rollin up as the token convert to OCIA tonight in a sequined sweater and a black wool skirt and black tights
September 30, 2026 at 6:55 PM
I agree with the people who are saying that the “owning the libs” thing isn't per se a convert thing but it’s weird to say the opposite. Plenty of them do sit through through RCIA (now called OCIA).
