Book of the day is Octavia Butler’s “Kindred.” I loved the Earthseed books (Parable of the __) tho the prescience *freaked* me out, honestly as did Lauren Olamina. I started Kindred a couple years ago but then got distracted; time to restart & also finish.

I feel like the philosophy of Earthseed, so centred around the terror and power of change, also kind of means that none of these stories are locked-in destinies we should assume are unavoidable, which I kinda feel Lauren Olamina would agree with......

I love Octavia Butler's Parable books. But they're complex works. The fires in the books were started by arsonists hooked on a fictional drug. And Lauren Olamina is not a clear-cut hero.
They obviously resonate today, but to say that they "predicted" the present feels like it flattens their nuance.

I would agree about Mrs Weasley (the most powerful witch of her generation, but never tempted to overuse it) and Olamina, but Arya? She would latch on to that power so fast, and hunt down every person with a hint of Lanister bloodline.

I keep seeing people quoting Earthseed uncritically, and it makes me nervous. Am I the only one who read Olamina as an intelligent, charismatic, *dangerous*, demagogue?
