the trans moral panic pushed by the NYT and Atlantic is about transphobia, obviously, but it's also about older wealthy readers believing that as adults they have the right to control their children's identities and futures.

Bluesky is perfect for a news organization actively seeking new, economical ways to reach readers.
But that's not what the DMN is interested in. They'd rather signal to their older, Republican print readers than to the overall, vibrant (and overwhelmingly Democratic) city of Dallas they serve.

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.
Older U.K. readers will remember what happened to Ratners, and perhaps in that one way the eighties were a better time.
Regarding the Anthropic "we're all doomed" story: if a safety advisor at a car company said there's a 1-in-10 chance our product will kill everyone within 10 years, how long would they stay an employee? And what would happen to the share price?

It absolutely does. Some of it doesn’t age well. So much older science fiction is incredibly racist and sexist by modern standards. I no longer recommend Heinlein, Asimov, or Clarke, even the stuff I like, because it turns off young readers.

one of these guys is reading what looks like an older academic book in what I'd guess is a student lounge or canteen! another is taking a break on a walk with his dog! it's the article writer who's stereotyping men as not being readers, and therefore men reading must be fake

First coffee in progress, and have discovered that Written on the Dark is still finding new readers (or older ones who waited for their July vacations?!). Seven weeks after release it remains on the CBC bestseller list (at #5).
My gratitude to readers, as I’ve been saying at events, is very real.
