Lone Survivor: It always seems rather sad to come across an orphaned tenement which has been left standing when all its neighbours have been demolished.

I've been regularly walking past the Buttery on Argyle Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow for almost a decade now, and only spotted this rather charming threshold mosaic for the first time today.

In an ironic twist of fate, the Dowanhill Church in Hyndland, whose congregation were key players in the fight to keep Hyndland dry, is now home to the Cottiers Bar.

Often, as is the case for this one on Keppochhill Road in Glasgow, the survivors have a pub on their ground floor and this was what saved it as it was deemed too expensive to buy out the licence for such premises.

I presume it dates from the time in the 1930s and 40s when it was home to pub called the Shandon Bells. This was one of three Glasgow bars owned by the publican Lawrence Brady, all of which bore this same name!

While you can still just about make out its name along the front of the building where it once was, the Western Bar no longer exists and the site is now occupied by a branch of Greggs.

The difference was due, in part, to the wonderfully named Partick Wine, Spirit and Beer Trade Defence Association, and its one-time president John Mossman, who ran the Western Bar in the early 1900s.

But it's good at this early stage that planning staff are setting a clear expectation: they expect the building to remain in some form.
