I interviewed the author of The Charisma Machine in a 2018 OLPC feature that I wrote almost entirely on the "whatever happened to those little computers, anyway" impulse

STS/Communications scholar Morgan Ames (whom these authors don't cite) has repeatedly demonstrated that OLPC was ineffective at best, and harmful at worst, including in an award-winning book published in 2019.

The real question is why economists don't acknowledge work in other fields.

Things that tech bros read about in Neal Stephenson books and tried to make real:

Metaverse
Bitcoin
3D printers
E-paper
Google Earth
Free laptop for teaching poor kids (OLPC)
Network state
It really cannot be overstated that COVID happened, suddenly a bunch of absentee tech dads were forced to stay home where they saw their kids playing Animal Crossing while talking on Discord, then collectively decided to light a trillion dollars on fire to make Snow Crash IRL.

*if your machine has or would have official support for windows xp or below, then maybe don't run full fat systemd. that being said, the olpc xo-1 i have runs fedora with systemd with 64MB of ram and an SoC made in 2006 that takes less power than an LED light.

properly tuned, it's fine
