600 acres of U.S. Adirondack forest was just returned to the Haudenosaunee Native Americans. In a historic victory for the Landback movement, the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center (6NICC) has reclaimed 600 acres of ancestral forestland in Onchiota, New York.

Last week marked a historic milestone in New York: 600 acres in Onchiota returned to Haudenosaunee care. With support from TNC, The Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center now stewards 900 acres guided by Indigenous knowledge, culture and ecological science.

The Six Nations Iroquis Cultural Center (6NICC) has acquired 600 acres of forested land in Onchiota, NY, in the largest private landback deal in the state’s history. The land was purchased last week from Paul Smith’s College for $1.1 million with funding from The Nature Conservancy. The acquisition adds to a 330-acre parcel transferred to the Six Nations by the Adirondack Land Trust in 2022.

The Six Narions Iroquois center run by David Fadden, a Mohawk citizen, acquired the land from Paul Smith's College in New York

The goal is to restore the local ecosystem, build a youth camp, and enforce the land's rules in English and Mohawk
