This would have made the two sound identical, so Drummond gives Onewa a low, raspier and grumblier voice in this film. Perhaps Onewa was given fewer lines to further avoid confusion between the two roles, especially as they share more scenes together and have more interactions.

One of the few moments when the old Onewa shines through is when he threatens to punch Matau after he gets hysterical. But in his place, anyone would have probably done that. He later puts Matau into his place and struts off, which feels more like classic Onewa.

The other Toa have mostly rigid tools to hold onto their Rhotuka spinners with. Onewa has a loose flail, which would explain why he keeps spinning around uncontrollably as he flies. Only the tip of the flail would hang onto the spinner, leaving Onewa to dangle helplessly below.

In Legends of Metru Nui, Onewa was the one most critical of Vakama's plans and leadership. Since WoS requires Matau to be the bitter, cynical jerk whose complaining and bullying causes Vakama to join the bad guys, Onewa becomes less sardonic and oddly more optimistic, even taking Vakama's side once.

It's obvious that something got cut here. Onewa falling behind the others adds nothing, it doesn't impact the plot and it isn't even funny. A previous version of this scene involved a slapstick moment, Onewa slamming into the Coliseum like so many of Matau's cartoony gags from LoMN.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
The original script planned to name each Toa with on-screen captions, just like how LoMN did it, with Onewa being the first one identified. This didn't make it into the final film either.

Of the six main Toa in Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows, Vakama and Matau take all the spotlight. The others are completely sidelined, so I'll dedicate some discussion to them, starting with Onewa. His personality is distilled, his name is never spoken and he never activates his tool.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
As a side note, the voice alteration didn't work out perfectly. In my country's dub, some of Onewa's lines were voiced by Matau's and Whenua's voice actors because the dubbing director apparently kept confusing what Onewa was meant to sound like.

The final film omits a big chunk of the original script detailing the Toa's journey across the island to find Keetongu, ripe with exciting escapades and character interactions, reducing the elaborate series of sequences to a short narrated montage. Several Onewa scenes got cut.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
I can see why the gags got reduced to a minimum, as they arguably hampered each scene, but many interesting character scenes were tragically also discarded. The script showed the Toa dealing with various effects of the Hordika mutations, like Onewa realizing he understands birds.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
Onewa's standard personality is abrasive like rock; he always says what's on his mind to belittle others. Since he already got over these faults in the previous film, WoS doesn't really know what to do with him. His toxicity was transferred to Matau, so Onewa inherited Matau's comic relief role.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
The film felt the need to name absolute non-characters who only exist to be plot devices like Bomonga, Kualus and Pouks (who doesn't even have any lines) and Kollorak (who isn't even a character outside the film). Yet Onewa, one of the main heroes, never gets called by name.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
But Onewa never activates his flail in the film, even though the flail was fully 3D modeled. His club always remains retracted, so he loses control of his flight for no apparent reason. This was such an obvious physical gag but the execution got botched for some reason.

Just as bizarrely, every single instance of a character saying Onewa's name was cut from the script. The only time Onewa is identified by name in the finished film (apart from the credits) is when Nuju's X-ray heat sensor eye lens gives a readout of his name in Matoran letters.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
The 2005 story bible describes Onewa inventing the sport of kolhii (misspelled as "kohli"). This would have been a cute scene in the film, and it would have tied back to the significance of kolhii in Mask of Light. It's such a shame WoS is too short and rushed to have moments like this.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
Since the film cut most of Onewa's jokes, some of his scenes fall flat. When the other Toa are propelled into the air by their Rhotuka spinners, Onewa is left behind, looking at his tool in confusion. The next time we see him, he's flailing around in the air, trying to catch up.
October 13, 2026 at 12:15 AM
This joke got removed and replaced with a nonsensical scene. Why does Onewa begin staring at his tool when the others take off and why is he so clumsy at flying? His tool could be the answer to this, pointing to yet another potentially amusing idea that the film messed up.

It is at the bottom of Onewa Rd in Northcote, next to the turnoff to the harbour bridge and SH1 so anyone travelling out of the Northcote electorate sees it. Don't imagine it will convince undecided voters though!

This is at the bottom of Onewa Road, by the SH1 on ramp. I drove past yesterday and have no recollection of having seen them 😁

Another reason for the extra joint could be that it lets Whenua use his mutated arm as a crutch or third leg. Onewa also walks on all fours in brief moments, but the movie does its best to show the Hordika walking on the ground as little as possible, often hiding their legs.
October 10, 2026 at 9:26 PM
None are shafted harder than Onewa. The chained flail of his toy is never featured. His tool remains in its retracted mode for the whole film. This is similar to what happened in Legends of Metru Nui, where his two chained rock-climbing pitons got downgraded to a single hammer.
