Same, this is a good prompt!

Here is my play next list, and like Aura, I have played a couple of these on other platforms...but I'm pretty happy Steam thinks I will like this set of games.

Some fun trivia: I played through Arkham Asylum via the OnLive platform! Shoutout to grad school budgets.

There aren't enough "ideal" players who dip in occasionally while paying a monthly fee.

The landscape is strewn with failed services: Stadia, Utomik, Hatch, OnLive, CareGame, PlayGiga. Even Nvidia introduced a 100-hour cap earlier this year despite owning the GPUs and infrastructure.

OnLive: "How long do you give this thing?"
Stadia: "'bout as long as us."
Sega Channel: "Sounds about right to me."
Upcoming Changes to XBOX Cloud Gaming - Starting November, Game Pass plans include a set number of cloud gaming hours:

Cloud gaming sucked when it was called OnLive. Cloud gaming sucks now. Cloud gaming will suck forever.
Microsoft switches to monthly hour limits in big changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming, cites rising cloud costs:

▪️Ultimate: 15 hours
▪️Premium: 10 hours
▪️Essential: 5 hours

Once subscribers use up their hours, they can buy additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store

Fun fact I finished the entirety of Saints Row The Third using Onlive

I don't keep up with things like I used to and then I read headlines and think didnt we have these discussions 10 years ago. Then I look and it was actually 15 years ago. I feel like gaming is still stuck in like 2014

I saw an OnLive at a goodwill in 2012

i remember OnLive had Burnout Paradise as an early thing you could try and it felt about as good as you’d expect

I spent a ton of hours in my office at Activision playing the OnLive version of Homefront in like 2011, likely caught Covid in early 2020 while playing Gylt on Stadia in a Santa Clara hotel bar, own a Luna controller, and have tried out every streaming service before and since and yes. Highly agree.
i was in the beta for OnLive and i covered the launch of Stadia. i’ve followed game streaming for longer than most people have been aware it exists, and i’ve never been more certain that it is never going to be a viable way to enjoy video games in the long term

for casual stuff maybe if a Netflix really invests in it for casual games (Jackbox, etc) but I’m shocked how little it feels like the tech’s really evolved since OnLive too
September 3, 2026 at 6:20 PM
I tried both onlive and stadia and was genuinely worried that we were headed for a future where the “Netflix of gaming” model really took off for one of these companies because it was “good enough” for most people. Thankfully they’ve been bad in a number of ways I couldn’t have imagined
