Marc Bloch: Why is the cup empty?

bsky.app/profile/onsl...
Today's the anniversary of the Nazis executing Marc Bloch. Or, someone who could sit with uncertainty, champion inquiry & trying to understand, and recognise plurality & perplexity. And, in that knowledge, made the choice not to remain passive.

For paper: because gloves make you more clumsy and lead you to grip the (fragile) paper without enough sensitivity. Your bare hands make you more careful. Gloves are still better for metals etc.

The weekend! Why not write a quick email to your MP to encourage them to stop #UKHE spiraling? With the change in leadership and Burnham's focus on regional strengths, there's a window to change government's strategy.

Dream Team!! Kindly Phoenix, if we’re successful *please* don’t schedule us in parallel because I might be needing Chant Plants for my paper …

Maybe we should plot to get some plants in the audience who are prepped and who make everyone else feel like it is the most natural thing to join in the chant…

imagine seeing this and deciding what we really needed was some fanfic or goofy AI slop where Calvin inevitably marries Suzie Derkins and the omnipresent subtext that we never know if Hobbes is actually a toy or not (because who gives a shit) is inevitably made text bsky.app/profile/onsl...

I'm regularly the lone medievalist at thematic conferences - I enjoy the discussion across periods. In fact, I'm doing exactly that next week. It's a shame that the decision was made for me and my colleagues.

bsky.app/profile/onsl...
😔 ah, yeah, so sorry to hear. From what I heard there literally was just the one, which then seemingly was yours, and that programme compilers felt it would have been unfair to you, both fearing for attendance at your session and how you would experience the rest of the conference.

Probably not selected as juror for this trial because I said 🧊 should not be allowed to carry guns and entered into the record that the Stockley police kettling was illegal. 🙌 Sooo, I’m close enough to Crown for a treat. #onsl

this thread pairs nicely with the excellent responses to which historians are beautiful prose writers: bsky.app/profile/onsl... #SkyStorians
Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

How fascinating. Because they started this s*** in August. And suddenly, within a week, they deactivate it.

Quite the sign of how experts don't actually use Grammarly and thus hadn't noticed until last week? And how stressed Grammarly is about potential law suits now that we do realise.

While I’m being enthusiastic about Goscinny: the English translation is itself fascinating. bsky.app/profile/onsl...
God I love the English translations of Asterix. And yes, they're the perfect example for why you need humans to actually understand the text and the purpose -- word-for-word translations simply do not work.

See: how the initial translation failed, until translators adapted creatively:
