If you have a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac with Onstar system inside, you now have wifi access, even if you don't have an onStar subscription:

If I remember correctly, GM released OnStar back in 1996.
Connected cars have been a thing for a very long time, and virtually every new car sold today has the ability to connect to the internet.
I am not saying that is a good thing, but this is absolutely not a reality unique to EVs.

I worked for OnStar on 9/11, and sitting on the phone trying to help drivers get out of the city with no GPS and inaccurate or zero information was a formative moment in my understanding of our dependence on technology.

I think I underestimate the number of guys who want OnStar but for their whole personal life.

Way back in 2016 I warned folks that Tesla and GM's Onstar are the absolute worst when it comes to automotive privacy, and these days I'm feeling pretty good about that call

If you have a GM and want to make sure this is off, go to the OnStar app, the account icon, go to Settings, and make sure OnStar Smart Driver is off.
On the web, under Data & Privacy you can remain opted into Smart Driver but opt out of the GM Insurance’s Driving Program (which is a new option!)

Not really. OnStar has explicit control over all features of the car via the CAN bus, including disabling it completely. They're not "attacking" it, per se, they're using their quasi-law-enforcement powers to have OnStar *staff* remotely disable it via its always-on cellular internet connection.
