Yeah, I tried to take a picture of a lunar eclipse in 2024 and had similar bullpucky happen. Fortunately it's the camera app that's doing it, so if you use another app like OpenCamera you get a camera that acts like a camera.

Apparently you can focus bracket with a cell phone (using the OpenCamera App). This created a series of images that were then stacked in Photoshop to improve depth of focus. The unstacked version, straight from my phone, is on the left.

Pasándome a OpenCamera porque me hace gracia lo de los chorrocientos megapixeles y óptica zeiss en el móvil para acabar haciendo fotos con una app que mete filtros e IA que no puedes desactivar y te queden las fotos rarunas. Luego usas una app pelada y mirad qué ojazos y sin retocar ni los niveles.

Photo set up if anyone is interested. I bought some fancy crafting papers on ebay and i just curve them on the desk and use my painting lamp to light the scene. Gets lovely results for almost no cost. I just use OpenCamera on my phone to take the pics.

ok looks like we pinned down the cause of camera images getting stretched on Android, exif tags strike again
2/2 I overcame some of the obsolescence caused by Android 6.
I tethered the Nexus to my Samsung phone data then downloaded & installed/"sideloaded" 3 APK app files:
* Firefox 140.0: web support.
* NewPipe 0.28.3: YouTube support
* OpenCamera 1.55: Camera2 API & RAW (uncompressed) format support!

i gave OpenCamera a spin tonight, and while the photos are definitely blurrier and have kind of a haze to them, they don't look like AI hallucinations

So I downloaded OpenCamera and even though it doesn't seem to be fixing that slight fisheye effect Pixel loves to have on the front camera, the color and exposure is SO much better without all that processing. You can finally see my eye color!

it wasn't just Samsung's generated moon shots, I've tried swapping Googs Camera for Opencamera on my Pixel 5, and the results are distinctly dogshit without their specific software
As @unknownbinaries.bsky.social and others have often said, I'm getting really fucking tired of people leaving all the actual imaging process to the cameras' software and algorithm choices.
