I've been active on social media for something like 25 years, if you count communities like OpenDiary, Asian Avenue, Livejournal, and others before FB, IG, X and Bluesky. I was definitely addicted to Twitter for multiple years. But mostly I post less because I'm really, really tired.

If you are in your late thirties to mid-forties right now, there is a good chance that you have spent most of your life in a cycle of making some sort of home on the internet only to have it crumble beneath you like chalk and having to start over.

I'd argue OpenDiary or LiveJournal. (And ugh, OpenDiary's Wikipedia article claims they invented the "friends only" concept ... in fucking 2003. AKA four years after LiveJournal.)

There were a few social networks like Classmates and Six Degrees that had it, but they were mostly old-style "reproduce your existing offline social graph" social networks. Either OpenDiary or LiveJournal was the first with the "friends as RSS aggregator" concept; I think it was LJ--

For digital networking...Early 90's (94?) BBS system that you had to connect to via a phone number with your modem. Then Prodigy, MSN, AOL. Those were three big social networks back then. AOL eventually surpassed. I had ICQ. Plus, random message boards, Love journal, OpenDiary...
This is, in all seriousness, the biggest Millennial/Gen Z dividing line: whether your first social network pre- or post-dates facebook.

Yup! There is a highly credible argument LJ was the first thing we would retrospectively identify as a modern social media site. (The other real contenders IMO are SixDegrees, which was '97, and OpenDiary, which was '98.)
