Ha. Well, if openlook was still a viable option, then I would be using olvwm.

Hyprland

Yeah used an Iris Indigio in '92 to write Autocad add-ons. That thing was beautiful. Stock machine was a Sun Sparcstation for dev back then. Wrote custom Openlook widgets in C. Those were the days

Wow.
That makes me feel super old. Because I really started getting into Linux in August 1994... (OpenLook was the hot desktop at the time)

Wonder when #FreeBSD & #DragonFly BSD will get their own lightweight "enhanced" WM's that have modern features & expectations.
Oh, and more fitting tags that include the sun theme because i forgot them:
#NetBSD #OpenBSD #BSD #FVWM #CTWM #Sun_OS #Solaris #OpenLook #olvwm #olwm

(meanwhile I groove out and all of a sudden I'm back in my dad's office in the summer of 1992 in his comfortable but extremely ugly 70s-ass office chairs trading off with my brother who gets to play on the sparcstation with the openlook vector art program and who gets to play Metroid on the gameboy)

True story... Around 1994 I worked at Sun Microsystems on a hand-held tablet project. Our prototype's UI was the same OpenLook UI as all our other workstations. I pleaded with my boss to invite Mike Okuda a peak so that we could get his take on what a UI might look like. But alas, I was told "no".

Yes, there is: the browser.

Historically, the majority of GUIs have tried to be cross-platform (I used Motif, OpenStep, OpenLook,...). The "browser" (actually HTML+CSS+JS) is just one, and very successful since the death of IE.

And it is a very decent GUI, especially compared to the past...

Ugh.

This was such a letdown after OpenLook and CDE.

If I wanted Windows, I'd have bought Windows.

OLWM! Omg those corner widgets are giving me flashbacks and heart palpitations. The great OpenLook vs Motif wars were brutal and hard fought.

maybe the post-industrial arts and crafts is cobbling together garbage from the industrial period. which on the computer means using, like, openlook or gnustep. which is what the kids are doing actually, if you look on r/unixporn
