#opercula
Amazing study! Bithynia opercula are the trapdoor-like structures of small freshwater snails, in case, like me, you were wondering:
We’re really privileged to be part of this study: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/..., working on the exceptional Schöningen site to try to narrow down its age. We analysed Bithynia opercula from excavation blocks taken from the spear horizon, looking at their intra-crystalline amino acids. 🧵 1/5

These opercula (bud caps) protect the #flowers of gum trees until they’re ready to blossom. These are particularly hearty.

#FlowersOnFriday: Unlike most flowers, gumblossoms have no petals—just colourful stamens revealed when the bud caps (opercula) fall off.

🌸 Angophoras are the exception, with true petals and sepals (4th image). Read (and see) more on our Facebook or Instagram. #LoveAGum #ozplants

#FlowersOnFriday: The 'operculum' is a defining feature of the eucalypt genera Eucalyptus & Corymbia. Composed of fused petals, this bud cap prevents the growing flower from drying out & reduces insect damage.
In contrast, Angophora species lack opercula & have rudimentary petals & sepals #LoveAGum

The aptly-named 'octopus mallee' (Eucalyptus sinuosa) has the longest bud caps (opercula) of any eucalypt species.
Only named in 2008, this rare species is restricted to a handful of populations near the south coast of Western Australia.

Also there are marine pulmonates and pulmonates with opercula.

Because whenever we think we've got things sorted, along comes Nature in prankster mode.

(Amphibolidae, I'm looking at you.)

When compared to other northern European sites, including a new framework worked on by Ellie Nelson @ellienelson12.bsky.social across Germany, the opercula amino acid geochronology points to a MIS 7 age (~200,000 years) for the spear horizon.

I thought Henbane as a nightshade relative would have berries forming after the flowers but it turns out they have 'bilocular operculate capsules' each with a lid or 'operculum' 7 in this print, so these are three opercula! 😉
