To wrap up #SnakeWeek we have a smooth green snake, Opheodrys vernalis, a small green snake found in northern and central North America. They primarily eat invertebrates and, as a result, are susceptible to pesticides which have in some areas decimated their once plentiful numbers.

These little guys are common but very difficult to spot, blending in perfectly with foliage.

Because it is cold outside, a summer picture: hatchling rough green snake (Opheodrys aestivus) perched on seed capsules of Florida flame azalea (Rhododendron austrinum) in my garden. 🌱🐍

We went on an adventure this morning to look for a smooth green snake (Opheodrys vernalis) for my husband to photograph. We didn't have any luck with that species, but we did find several wandering garter snakes (Thamnophis elegans) and got to enjoy some beautiful scenery west of Boulder, Colorado.

The Smooth Green Snake is smaller and mostly terrestrial. The Rough Green Snake is longer, and spends most of its life in trees!

Non-political post, alas no picture. Yesterday in the front yard, I stopped with one foot in the air having seen that my next step would come down on a very small snake, a rough green snake, Opheodrys aestivus. Commonly called a "grass snake" because it's green. One of my favorite snakes.
