Ophiusa parcemacula - Figure Eight Moth

A new observation for us, we spotted this relatively large moth in a coastal area around 120km north of Perth. iNat records show this moth can be seen across large parts of Australia.

A well known moth-migrant was this species - Crimson Speckled - Utetheisa pulchella, with a great total of 43 in the traps! - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of October 2025. And this was probably star moth of the night - with 9 seen in varying colour forms! Ancylosis harmoniela - to put this into context - in 13 years of detailed surveying at this site, I have only before trapped 4 of them! Ancylosis is an exciting genus with some great species in there! Ophiusa tirhaca - is a moth that I haven't worked out - is it a migrant or a scarce resident, or both? - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of October 2025.

This was definitely my favourite moth of the night! - a very fresh Parallel Lines - Grammodes bifasciata - that I have never seen here before! - moth-trapping at Punta Paloma, near Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 8th of April 2026. And I have only seen 28 before in 14 years of surveys - I think nearly all the rest were at Algaida/Trebujena? And this Ophiusa tirhaca certainly grabs attention as it tries to get into my notebook! So, this is the real star migrant moth species I spoke of in the introduction and I saw 2 very different looking individuals of them on the night. It is the Crambidae moth species, Cornifrons ulceratalis - note the distinctive bump on its forehead. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 19th of March 2025.
