A huge resurgence in Bogong moth numbers has been seen in Australia’s Eastern states recently.

Last week we had more than 200 Bogong moths in one night to our Perth Hills moth light, so the resurgence has extended to Western Australia too!

We nearly missed this beautiful Dichromodes sp. moth because it was so perfectly camouflaged against the almost white sandy soils of Yelverton National Park in the southwest of Western Australia

Chrysodeixis argentifera - Tobacco Looper

A moth that is found across Australia and New Zealand.

We see a few of these at our Perth Hills moth light each year, usually from the end of spring through to the start of summer.

Ochrogaster lunifer - the Bag-shelter Moth

A new visitor to our Perth Hills moth light seen last week.

This moth has quite a striking defensive posture and those long white hairs on its abdomen can cause intense skin irritation if touched.

Poecilometis apicalis subsp. apicalis (nymph)

These Gum Tree Stink bugs are quite common visitors to our Perth Hills moth light. They are endemic across the southern parts of Australia where they feed on the sap of various eucalypts.

Thallarcha albicollis - Crossed Footman

A warmer day on Saturday in the Perth Hills so a greater diversity at the moth light, including this Crossed Footman.

This moth has only been recorded twice in WA, both times in our garden.

A post in honour of #FlyDay

This rather large horse fly (Tabanidae) was making the most of the sunshine and spring flowers last weekend.

These flies can be a bit of a challenge on warm days when out and about in the Aussie bush.

Opodiphthera helena - Helena Gum Moth

This has to be one of the most amazing moths to visit our moth light!

The Helena Gum moth is one of the largest moths in southwest Western Australia. This one had a wingspan of around 13cm. Stunning! 😍

Nerthra sp. - one of the Toad Bugs (I think)

Spotted this amazingly well camouflaged Toad Bug recently, if it hadn’t moved we’d never have seen it.

Good news #invert story of the week 🦋

After a catastrophic decline in numbers over recent years that placed Australia’s iconic Bogong moth on the IUCN Red List, their numbers have really surged this year!

After a catastrophic decline bogong moths are back, and naturalists are celebrating
Bogong moths numbers have surged after years of decline, flying evidence of an ancient transfer of vital nutrients from lowlands to the fragile high country.

We've recorded this Tortricid Leafroller moth (I think) at our Perth Hills moth light several times, then we spotted this one on a recent walk. Makes the purpose of those patterns and colours clearer

Nicodamus mainae (I think)

One of the Red and Black spiders, this guy really stood out against the sandy soil of Wandoo National Park.

Although bright red in colour, these spiders are not as venomous as some of their Aussie cousins 🕷️
