Chrome is reaching into users' machines and writing a 4 GB on-device AI model file to disk without asking. It is the weights for Gemini Nano, Google's on-device LLM. Chrome did not ask. Chrome does not surface it. If the user deletes it, Chrome re-downloads it.

1/4 Well look at that. Open Ai and Google outright reject “Opt-Out” models, hell they even reject basic transparency requirements.

AI companies demand they get everything, including our Intellectual Property, for free, and without anyone ever being able to tell the companies no.

OpenAI and Google have objected to Labour’s proposed opt-out model and pushed for broader exemptions to let AI software use copyrighted material free

OPT OUT & say NO to #GitHub using your interaction data to train & improve its AI models. 🚨

GitHub is the next company to choose to opt you into having your data used - by default. 🚩

Opt out in Settings -> Copilot -> Features.

Under "Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training" → Disabled.

Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB Gemini Nano AI model on your device

❌ No consent
❌ No opt-in
❌ No real opt-out for regular users

This isn’t a small experiment & it’s on billions of devices.

... even if the AI model is designed to compete with the creators whose work is trained on. This would make the UK one of the most punitive jurisdictions for creators in the world.

- Rights holders can 'reserve their rights', i.e. opt out. But opt-outs don't work...

Every artist and animator should know, OpenAI has deemed your work fair game to feed to SORA unless you use their "Opt-Out form".. That they claim exists, but doesn't appear to exist. We need new ways to fight for our creative rights - www.cartoonbrew.com/tech/openai-...

Even when you hand them everything, those fucks scream at you for the plate not being silver. Another good reason to stick with real creativity.

All artists need to know: OpenAI’s new Sora video generator will use copyrighted work by default unless rights holders opt out. Artists and studios may need to act to protect their creations.

Google Chrome is now silently pushing a 4GB AI model (Gemini Nano) to your local disk without asking. No opt-in, no notice, and it re-downloads even if you delete it.

Beyond the lack of consent, the estimated climate cost of forcing this on 2B+ users is massive.

So the idea that you can't train large language model "AI"s w/o copyrighted materials is a) bullshit, & b) a very subtle deflection from the point.

Consent, compensation, & control of one's works have always been the point. Ask permission, compensate fairly, & let people opt out whenever they want

Nope, AI models should be opt-in only. Opt out gives them too much time to already include your data in the model, and even if you switch it off, they aren’t going to take it out.

Nice analysis of the climate costs of Chrome pushing a 4GB Geminin nano to people's devices. Even just looking purely at the download (ignoring inference, re-downloads etc) it's substantial (not sure it's 'insane'), and shows the Google is just kinda doing stuff pretty thoughtlessly

yeah I do think change kinda goes down smoother if you to let people passively somewhat opt out of it in ways that don't actively hurt others. but the Fox News outrage bait business model strained this safety valve and social media broke it. don't know how to fix that.
July 28, 2025 at 8:59 PM
(my actual factual opinion on AI is going to remain: you don't get to steal other people's work and then charge for it, you skeezy ass motherfuckers.

since I don't have time to deep dive every single model to see if they trained it ethically, I opt out until we've resolved this situation.)
