#optogenetics,
So there's more.. they of course did not list chlorine gas among these gases... but then again they also haven't told people OPTOGENETICS IS NOT NEW!

Optogenetics made me fall in love with neuroscience. For my PhD I joined Gero Miesenböck’s lab, where it was pioneered to control neural activity & behaviour.
Congrats to photobiologists, biophysicists, fly & mouse geneticists whose work turned an elegant idea into a tool that still feels like magic

2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine
- The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine honors optogenetics, a revolutionary technique that uses light-sensitive proteins to switch neurons on or off. This breakthrough lets scientists study brain circuits controlling movement, memory, and behavior.

...more like to be familiar with her and her work than his. I had the privilege of working with Michelle on a large grant a few years ago and she is absolutely brilliant in every way. Anyway, personally I'm vaguely familiar with optogenetics but mostly know Karl Deisseroth as Michelle's husband 😀

This is a good week! On Monday, my PhD co-supervisor @deisseroth.bsky.social was awarded the @nobelprize.org for his work on optogenetics. Yesterday, I submitted my primary postdoc work on photopharmacology, a complementary method that uses light for the precise spatial and temporal release of drugs

And the possibilities aren't limited to understanding the brain.

Researchers are investigating whether optogenetics can help restore some visual function in people whose retinal photoreceptors have deteriorated.

The idea? Make surviving retinal cells responsive to light.

That's the foundation of optogenetics: using light-sensitive proteins to control the activity of selected cells.

Think of the difference between switching on every light in a building and controlling individual rooms.

For neuroscience, that precision changes everything.

🧠 What if you could switch a single brain cell ON or OFF using light?

Optogenetics allows researchers to control genetically targeted neurons with light, helping reveal how brain cells shape neural circuits and behavior.
