Reading about the toilet on Artemis II... I think we ostomates have a great advantage—even if the toilet's down, it's a lot easier to catch number 1 than number 2 🤭

Saluting and sending love to the ostomy warriors and the great ostomates all over the world. Every journey with a stoma isn’t the same, but everybody with an ostomy story deserves respect, and not to feel any shame.

Thank you SO much to all who donated to the UOAA this weekend, we almost hit $2,000 between the livestream and the 5K! Those dollars will help the lives of so many ostomates, and provide resources for nurses. Also loved seeing so many others in the ostomy community celebrate #WorldOstomyDay!

Some ostomates say carnivore diets may reduce blockage risk and pouch volume, but evidence is limited. For ileostomates, dehydration/electrolyte loss and high-output risk are concerns; tough meat can cause blockage if poorly chewed. Consult your doctor.

Hi to all the fresh & familiar faces here.

I’m doing my part & attempting starter packs for #IBDFamily & #Ostomates. These are who’ve spoken 𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐘 about these.

IBD Family: go.bsky.app/9sySUqv
Ostomy Family: go.bsky.app/LYbv12w

If there’s other packs already created, I’m happy to merge.

seeking community maybe. when i was stuck with an ostomy for years it was nice to be able to commiserate with the other ostomates, for example

shot down in the focus group because the term would have been exclusionary to the ostomates

Today I celebrate my first stomaversary, the day when I was given ‘Myrtle’ after suffering a perforated colon. I’m forever grateful to the surgical team that saved my life and gave me my constant and sometimes not so quiet companion! #Colostomy #Ostomates #Stoma #MedwayMaritimeHospital

I feel it’s important to raise awareness about that because there are a lot of ostomates who post videos of them changing their bags - which is of course amazing, but it takes them two seconds and sometimes that’s not everyone’s reality.

Absolutely crazy to me that I had ostomy surgery almost a year ago and there are still foods I’m trying for the first time. #blessed #ostomates #ostomyawareness

“Fun” Medical History Fact:

The first stoma surgery was in 1710… but the first colostomy/ileostomy appliances didn’t exist till the 1950s.

The mere thought of living with my stoma but having no safe appliances for it is terrifying.

It breaks my heart for ostomates in Gaza, trying to survive.

Boo: I have to change my ostomy bag and my hip hurts so badly, I really don’t wanna deal with it…

Yay: I can eat all the marshmallows out of our box of Lucky Charms guiltlessly, since marshmallows can help slow output (protip for my fellow ostomates!)

Today is #WorldOstomyDay #StomaAwarenessDay Have a great day Ostomates and carry out being the great ambassadors that you are. Thinking of you all, keep up the great work! 💜💜

And it was a nurse who created the bags! She saw the suffering of patients and was also like “wtf”.

I’m immensely glad to be born when I was just for this. It’s really upsetting to think about all the ostomates before me. They deserved such better QoL.

For my fellow ostomates, a trick for changing your bag out:

Eat a few marshmallows about 10-15 minutes before you plan to change. For whatever reason it helps temporarily stop/slow output, at least long enough for a quick chance!

The only truly useful thing my ostomy nurses taught me at the start.
If I don’t do it first thing, I stress about it all day & don’t eat:

Fun Fact, with an ileostomy you have absolutely 0 control over when it outputs, so I have to time bag changes with when my Crohn’s bod is less likely to literally shit on all my plans.

Mornings are best for changes because of it.

Our mission is to help underserved ostomates access the essential supplies they need. We’ve collected over 350,000 donated ostomy supplies, keeping usable medical products out of landfills and putting them in the hands of people who otherwise couldn't afford them.

No wonder misconceptions about ostomies persist, worsened by ostomates using terms like 'bag.' I find it demeaning—it's a pouch, part of a life-saving appliance, and it deserves respect for representing survival and recovery from a severe illness.

Uhhh why did my medical supplies show up pre filled? Any other #ostomates get a bad batch too? #resist

Insights from MeetAnOstoMate Ostomy surgery usually doesn’t impact life expectancy. Factors like health, lifestyle, and care play a bigger role. Many ostomates enjoy long, fulfilling lives—some living well into their 90s.

Ostomy products should be free, no questions asked. If not for ostomates themselves, then CERTAINLY for everyone else around them. 👀
