I sometimes see a big hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) and I sometimes see a big hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). But I rarely see them side-by-side. That Ostrya is especially chonk! #thicktrunkthursday #Betulaceae #iamabotanist

Some of the 12 #trees we have been looking after in Gundreda Road, #Lewes, after planting them in November 2021 - Celtis australis, (Nettle Tree), Crataegus x prunifolia, (Cockspurthorn)m Acer campestre "Louisa Red Shine", (Field Maple), and Ostrya carpinifolia, (Hop Hornbeam).

Carpinus betulus supports c. 132 species of invert as larval host, many of which also use other members of the Betulaceae: Alnus, Betula, Corylus, Ostrya. Relationships are often signalled by specific epithets: carpini, alneti, betulae, coryli. [Reaction wood, best impression of Iggy Pop.]

While going back for an interesting calicioid fungus on ironwood/Ostrya today I also noticed the elusive "ironwood chaga". I found this years ago and it has intrigued me since.

Ostrya virginiana is called Hophornbeam because of its fruits, which look like hops strung along the branches.
