The Otways are the last of the ancient Gondwana-era cool temperate rainforests on the south end of the Australian mainland, and it only burns one way: catastrophically. Last time it burned was 1939. Now... many more people live there & volunteers will try to save it. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01...

It really is fucking unbelievable how big the evacuation zone is for the Otways fire is.

For those not familiar with Victoria, the map below shows about a third (...?) of the Western Vic's whole coastline. The "evacuate immediately" region in the middle is about 60km x 40km. 😟

OK, that was one hell of a day! Started in Hepburn Springs, looking for a calm day of our road trip. Instead:
Heatwave conditions 🥵
2 bushfires doged ✅️
Massive storm, dodged floods ✅️
Tree fell on us (we are OK, car damaged) 😧
Otways NP was stunning though!
