This is the reason I think the term 'Oxbridge' is actively unhelpful, it makes the problem seem 50 per cent less bad than it is!
Side note: if Andy Burnham becomes PM, he'll be the first one educated at Cambridge since Stanley Baldwin, who matriculated in 1885.
This kind of thinking seeps into their mental model of unis too. Since a lot of senior MPs went to Oxbridge (or even just Oxford), they imagine, say, debate is a large part of the experience when 1) most unis don't have a debating union 2) most students don't attend a single extracurricular event.

I’ve seen a number of people commenting along the lines of “this is weird even for Oxbridge” and I think it is worth noting that this is way, way outside the Oxbridge norm. The one time I set foot in my doctoral supervisor’s house, she’d twisted her ankle so the seminar met in her living room.
According to the FT, Orr is acting as a live-in-landlord-cum-cult-leader to Cambridge students including those under his own supervision, whilst receiving formal complaints about his behaviour, and boasting publicly how the university is a recruiting ground for the party he might be doing crime for

A strange by-product of widening participation at Oxbridge is that it reinforces the idea that not getting into Oxbridge is a big deal; it really isn’t. It’s not a disadvantage to go elsewhere. There are (for now at least) great unis in the UK & it’s not a good thing to act like Oxbridge is special
we would be in a much better state in this country if we stopped focusing on anointing a chosen few working class students into Oxbridge, and instead properly funded all the different sorts of universities that attract students from a wide range of backgrounds already
Oxford University and @cam.ac.uk have each received a £6.25 million gift to expand their outreach work with socio-economically disadvantaged students in STEM subjects.
