Matt: I actually joined Palantir _because_ of Trump's re-election. This is difficult to explain in a LinkedIn comment, but I wrote a bit about this on my blog: mdwdotla.medium.com/on-startups-impact-and-the-search-for-meaning-eab571c36312 The TL;DR is this - I have an opportunity here to influence how the government and defense sectors adopt and build upon AI, and to be a force for good as that evolves. And despite how we are sometimes portrayed by the media, Palantir is actually a highly ethical proponent of civil liberties and freedoms. Palantir is not, in fact, assisting in carrying out human rights abuses under the Trump admin or anyone else, but you can be forgiven for thinking this based on some of the reporting out there. I'm happy to chat (at length!) about these matters, since I think Palantir's work is deeply misunderstood. You no doubt remember how the media would often portray the work we were doing at Google incorrectly, so this should not be too unfamiliar to you. Liz: Matt Welsh, thanks for responding. Certainly every large company's work can be misunderstood or misinterpreted, but my personal values (which are obviously not yours!) are that the very act of attempting to engage with the enforcement arm of organisations like DHS can have its own corrupting effect regardless of whether you are attempting harm reduction by trying to implement programs in a less-harmful way. The problem to me is endorsing doing the harm at all and giving it the capabilities to scale out. Even if you've lowered the false positive rate, or better protected privacy along the way, there is the inherent bias and harm to the mission you are trying to accomplish. Additionally, Palantir's own leadership has endorsed the nativist racism and "anti-wokeness" through its recent recruitment ads, so it would seem to me that it's not Palantir being misunderstood here. (see sfstandard.com/2025/04/18/palantir-woos-elite-college-students-and-theyre-feeling-the-vibe/) Matt responding: While it's not really my job (nor do I care to) defend Palantir's reputation on the Internet, anyone who knows me knows that I am thoughtful, highly opinionated, and principled about the kinds of work I will do and the kinds of companies and organizations I will work for. This might give you pause to consider why I would have taken a job at Palantir - if even half the things people sometimes say about them were true, I would be crazy to be working here. So, there may be more to the story than you realize. The reason I bother responding here is that I deeply respect you!
