The District of Columbia sits on the ancestral lands of the Anacostans (also known as the Nacotchtank), and the neighboring Piscataway and Pamunkey peoples.

The area we think of today as metro DC, was rich in natural resources that supported the local indigenous people living here.

It’s Indigenous People’s Day today, and only Indigenous People’s Day. I live on stolen Powhatan and Pamunkey peoples’ land and I do not forget it. Celebrate indigenous culture, it has never been more important than now

Long before Northern Virginia became what it is today, tribes like the Pamunkey, Manahoac, and Patawomeck lived on and cared for these lands.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize their lasting legacy right here where GKG’s headquarters is based.

OTD in 1676: Nathaniel Bacon, along with about 150 of his men and 45 Pamunkey prisoners, arrived at Jamestown a day before and skirmished with Berkeley's soldiers near Glasshouse Point.

To protect their line, Bacon's men began building temporary fortifications and, for protection, paraded the Pamunkey prisoners along the tops of the fortifications as human shields.

Then, under the cover of darkness, a few rebels snuck out and did something unthinkable.
