Reform Jewish “New Deal Democrat” in RVA. Attorney. He/Him/His.
My Grandma Fran was raised in a very pious Dutch Calvinist household. She sent my mother to Sunday school every week, and they went to church most Sundays.
My grandmother was the type of Catholic who went to mass 7 days a week.

When her son came out as gay when she was 64, she supported him unconditionally and started going to Pride parades. When I got a girl pregnant when I was 17 who had an abortion, she started walking girls into Planned Parenthood
I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum

If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom?

You were never a parent at all

You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

They key to a true “luxury” hotel room is it looks like it emerged from an vintage Ralph Lauren catalog.
Lots of beautiful hand-done woodwork and tile work, absolutely nothing in chrome or plated in gold.

Powering through the Smiley-verse. Started with ‘Call for the Dead’ and now partway through ‘The Secret Pilgrim.’

It’s crazy how he starts off like Daniel Craig: British turned great murder detective before becoming the spy everyone now loves properly.

The local Jewish Community Federation held a talk by an Indian Jew about the Jews of India.

It was EXTREMELY uncomfortable how, even after the lecture, much of the audience couldn’t understand that they weren’t recent converts, they kept kosher, had synagogues, etc.
Parents' Catholic parish had an Indian priest for a few years, and when people would ask him when he converted, he'd stare blankly at them because he didn't want to explain his family had been Christian for hundreds of years.

“You don’t dress like an old man, you dress like a young man in the 1950s”- my Fiancé

Maybe my experience is unique but I met my fiancé on Hinge, my last long term GF on Hinge, and the one before that on Coffee Meets Bagel.

When I was single *super* single I often had at least one new date every weekend, if not more. I wouldn’t say I was swiping right on everyone either.
The correct way to design a dating app is to give people a big pool of candidates and let them designate 5-10, the designees can be sent a message (optional) and are allowed to message you, but if you want to designate more people you have to remove some from your current list.
Free startup idea : dating app with swipe rate limits and no way to buy extra ones.

I love my fiancé so much. However, she’s learning about antisemitism for the first time, how it exists, and its pervasiveness and its extremely funny.

Particularly in the context of her going through the conversion process.

Let’s just say, I encountered someone who had lost 100,000s of dollars betting on obscure Nigerian soccer matches.

Not great!
I say this a lot, but I wouldn't have such a problem with sports betting apps if it were POSSIBLE to simply use them to lay 20 bucks on the occasional game. But the instant you download one, it insists that you to bet on every aspect of every sporting event happening everywhere in the world.

I always loved my insurance through my employer. Not uncommon I think for attorneys in private practice.

Now, as a remote attorney that works 100 miles from the main office, I’m less enamored. It is clearly better, in terms of network, in the home area vs. where I live.
He’s obviously right on the merits but the idea Americans hate private health insurers is in tension with the bizarre-but-true fact that most Americans like THEIR OWN health insurance.

This is extremely true in re: clothing and is somewhat harped on by @dieworkwear.bsky.social

And while there are certain menswear brands that make it their thing to be “no fuss stuff identical to clothes from 60 years ago,” i.e. O’Connells, JPress, etc. they’re rare and dying.
I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

This was a *fun* thing to try and explain, repeatedly, to some extremely smart & worldly people in Heilbronn last year.
I can help. Non Americans have no idea he's insane. The ones who are against him believe he's sane and choosing to harm them for reasons they can't figure out, the ones who are for him believe he's sane and choosing to help them. Both are stunned every time whenever he changes

Our mandatory car insurance minimums are way too low and, within a margin of error, “no one” has ever *actually* been prosecuted for driving without insurance.

Driving should very much treated as more of a privilege than the right it often is.
if you're bad at driving you shouldn't do it
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Fascinating seeing who AIPAC supports politically now being arguably exactly inverse to that of American Jews as a whole.

It feels insane reading the “Gotham” trilogy or “The Power Broker” and how NYC has been having not dissimilar budget problems and arguments for essentially *forever*.
Paraprofessionals earn $32k a year in NYC, work extremely hard jobs, and are absolutely vital for providing legally mandated services to children with disabilities. The city can't recruit or retain them under the status quo.
My kid’s school doesn’t even have a nurse? Will the teaching aides be nurses too? What other public employees deserve a $10K bonus payable by the city? Menin is over her skies.

The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with an ōdachi, a type of traditionally made Japanese sword used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. The Western battlefield equivalent of this type of sword in terms of weight and length is the Zweihänder, though the Chinese miaodao or zhanm

As someone who worked in this field for years as an attorney: mandatory minimums are indeed way to low and keeping them so low is an example of slopulism that one should fix.

Also, the number uninsured drivers is significantly higher than one thinks and it is never prosecuted.
This is the first factor that contributes to high premiums: medical care is fucking expensive and every state in the country has mandatory minimums that are entirely too low. Now, there's some nuance here state by state: some states have what's called "no-fault" insurance.

I don’t fully disagree, but I think it makes less sense in the context of her signing the AWB and vetoing the union bill.

We’ll see soon, but the list of signed vs vetoed bills where she offered amendments doesn’t seem to make too much sense to me so far.

At my last job, I had a company car and this was a factor in why we didn’t go EV. I was routinely putting 50,000+ miles on the odometer a year with daily 4-6 hour drives.
The other problem is consumer demand. This is a more complex issue than it seems at first. The average annual miles driven per passenger car in China is about 6,000. In the EU it's about 6,500. In the US, it's about 13,500. The US is big, and people drive much longer distances than elsewhere. 9/x
