The cliffside Necropolis of Pantalica in Sicily was likely built between 1300–950 B.C., before the Greeks arrived. But the tombs weren't forgotten—some were expanded to be big enough to walk around in.

What's really amazing to me is that from more than 4,000 rock-cut tombs at Pantalica, there appear to be no remaining examples of the supposed limestone slabs that closed off the entrances? What happened to them? Systematically removed/quarried and re-used? Or maybe wood closures that decayed? 🏺

The enigmatic "Anaktoron" or princely palace at one of the highest points above the Anapo river. Associated with the Pantalica necropolis and excavated in the 1890s by Paolo Orsi, the Anaktoron seems based on a Mycenaean pattern & dates from the 11-12 c.BC

There are only a handful of closure slabs that have been recovered from rock-cut tombs in Sicily, and none (??!) are from the thousands of tombs at Pantalica. These are two of a handful from elsewhere in Sicily with anthropomorphic designs on the outside. #WorldHeritage🏺
