entomologists get people with delusional parasitosis/ "morgellons" (thinking you have bugs or other things in your skin). mite and springtail people get the worst of it but it happens to all of us
What weird crank emails does your field get? Political science gets emails about how this 1 simple reform would change everything. I assume physicists get emails about free energy. What else?

It reminds me of Morgellons syndrome.
For decades this was thought to be a psychological disorder. Turns out, it's a bacterial infection. Delusional parasitosis absolutely exists, but many of these patients were being told for decades they had it when they didn't.

I historically get 1-2 out of the blue emails per year from someone seemingly with delusional parasitosis… page after page of prose. I can only imagine what AI chatbots are doing to them

I think a lot about how "only the league can see the vermin" is a reference to delusional parasitosis, and probably extraction of stones of madness as well, but also you're losing your mind inside the dream so they actually are kinda real if you choose to believe it
