I reseeded my lawn last week and topped it with a little compost. This bad boy popped up a couple of days ago! Paxillus involutus #fungifriends 🍄

Seeing these Rollrims all around the Aspen trees right now. Very boring sight topside but the underside is where they try to impress and intimidate you.

This morning I learned from Wikipedia about a mushroom that you can eat for years... And then it suddenly kills you.

So far no major illness has been reported after mushrooms tentatively identified as Paxillus involutus were sold. It’s not clear if anyone who ate them is out of the woods, Interior Health medical health officer Dr. Andy Delli Pizzi said.

Paxillus involutus, the common roll-rim, is a fungus that is widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere and has also been unintentionally introduced to Australia, New Zealand, and South America. The brownish fruit body grows up to 6 centimetres (2.4 in) high.

The change accessible DNA sequencing is making for amateur and pro mycologist can’t be understated. in years past I’d call this paxillus involutus, but within minutes of posting to iNat I get a message from someone who can now visually recognize this as P. obscurisporus due to sequenced collections

From WP-en: “Despite the poisonings, Paxillus involutus is still consumed in parts of Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, where people die from it every year.” 😬 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paxillu...

I went outside today and found some nice mushrooms.

I had the idea of a sketchbook dedicated to all mushroom species I see. Now thinking about how to go about that.

I'm starting to see a few large groups of fungi about now on my walks into Norwich. The first ones are False Chanterelle, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca on wood chips, whilst the others are Paxillus sp. (perhaps P. obscuriporus but not checked yet) growing with birch on amenity grassland. 🍄📷
