At launch it'd be the mid-486s and the cacheless Pentiums to worry about (packard bell P75s, etc would run worse than a 486dx4/AM5x86)

I went from 32 to 64 GB.
And I also come from the MB era. My first PC had 4 MB of RAM (486DX33) although I was up to 512MB by my Pentium2 400.
I'll admit that 64 is overkill but I won't build another for at least 6 years so I ensured a little future proofing.
