Fifty years later, he's a Tarantino character, a true-crime binge and a Halloween costume. Somewhere along the way, we stopped being horrified by cults and started being entertained by them.This video follows that shift through five cults. Manson turned the cult into spectacle. Jonestown became a punchline ("drinking the Kool-Aid"). Heaven's Gate was the first internet cult, remembered for its GeoCities website and matching Nikes. Scientology built its own celebrity machine. NXIVM became a streaming-era docuseries. Each era turned real atrocity into whatever its media knew how to sell.But this isn't really a story about them. It's about us, and what we do with a horror once we've decided it's finally safe to watch.They wanted to be seen. We turned them into a genre.
