Haha I love it. My personal hc is that Lucifer caused the permic extintion (was an accident)

smoking that shit that makes you create a transcription standard as absurd as the one wiktionary insists on for proto-permic

sometimes I remember that I actually know quite a lot about languages because what do you mean not everyone knows that finnish is part of the uralic languages as part of the finno permic languages in the finno volgaic branch?
January 23, 2025 at 2:58 PM
Permic is a small branch of Uralic that consists of Udmurt and several Komi languages, indigenous to an area west of the Ural mountains.

Yes, and Permic provides a crucial piece of evidence that the *ǰ- > ś- sound change took place very early, since ś- appears not only in post-Mongol loans from Middle Chuvash into Udmurt and Mari but also in pre-Mongol loans from Volga Bulghar (Old Chuvash) into Proto-Permic.

In my 2025 paper on Bulgharic-Permic relationship, I reconstruct a retroflex approximant *ɻ at the Proto-Turkic level. The l ~ š correspondence is best interpreted as a lateral fricative *ɬ.

Apparently there was a Uralic writing system in the 14th century called Permic. Why don’t they use it anymore? It’s computer-compatible and everything.

Kypchak became dominant only after the Mongol conquest, long after Proto-Permic had broken up. The post-Mongol period radically transformed the Volga region’s ethnolinguistic landscape and brought a substantial influx of Kypchak-speaking populations.

Old #Permic or #Anbur was derived from #Cyrillic to write #Komi, a #Uralic language in northern #European #Russia from 14th - 17th century.

Some of the letters were likely derived from Komi tamgas.

It's also long known that b- rather than p- is what turns up in most loanwords into Permic (however, they already reflect *ǰ- >> ś-).

Early Turkic–Permic contacts are revealing. Proto-Permic contains a secure layer of loans from a Volga Bulghar idiom closely resembling known Chuvash. It is therefore reasonable to call it Old Chuvash. This contact layer dates securely to the 8th–9th centuries.

Oh? What do you mean? Also please enlighten me on Permic, I've NEVER heard about it!

Or there will be an adaption, but not from human side, as it happened on the Triasic, for just a few selective species after Permic surviving.

Yes, I know Perm. Like in the Permian languages, Udmurt and Komi. And the alphabet Anbur, invented by Stephan of Perm to write Komi. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Per...

By contrast, Tatar loans cannot be reconstructed for Proto-Permic and are essentially absent from Komi, apart from words transmitted through Russian dialects and a few local loans in Komi-Permyak.
July 18, 2026 at 5:51 AM
I was going to mention that but also I think this hinges on how you view the Uralic languages of eastern/northern Europe (specifically Finnic, Sámi and I think maybe Permic as well).

Holopainen & Kuokkala recently again have criticized West Uralic: mersz.hu/dokumentum/m...
and I would have some unpublished data for common innovations in Finno-Permic, but maybe not even enough to claim it as a subgroup rather than just an early western dialect area.
